Revera Mastering. Logic’s Adaptive Limiter definitely works well. It can be a bit crunchy if pushed, so just use it to catch the small peaks of 1 or 2 dB on your mix and it should remain very transparent. The lookahead will cause a lot of latency which is unacceptable during writing but fine at mix time.

Try to use as little lookahead as possible. More than 10 or 20 ms is a lot and is likely to give you an intrusive anticipation before transients. If you’re having to use a long lookahead to avoid distortion, it might mean your mix has too much low end. There was also a pro version in the making, I was one of the beta testers, and it was really good and could easily compete with the big guys. Still hoping for an update. And the pro version is already available on their website, no?

Loudmax will hit zero VU…. I think there is more code behind it, so it sounds like its a bit more transparent. So you can blindly set it… i am not doing commercial work and you wont hear pumping and stuff.

Of course someone that does mastering ect professionally would laugh at this, but when you are using budget equipment like a Tascam DP and Audacitiy and Wavosour it works great. That prob sounds horrible. Mike Senior would probably have a problem with that :.

Now for an engineer doing mixes ect for money, all those rules change. Since it is often the loudest and most important element, a high-quality sound is essential.

Kick 2 will give you an electronic kick drum sound that is industry quality when it leaves the plugin. Logic has a similar stock plugin called Drum Synth if you are on a budget. However, the quality and versatility of this plugin do not remotely compare to that of Kick 2. Multi-band compression is a common process used to achieve the consistent, in-your-face, bright sound heard in modern EDM and House.

It can be used sparingly for a subtle injection of energy or excessively if you want energy that is over-the-top hence the name. There is no reason not to pick up OTT with a free price tag.

When producing in Logic, you are more or less confined to the horizontal linear timeline-based workflow, which is excellent for songwriting, sound design, or film music. Logic does have the functionality to work with loop triggering, but it is a relatively new feature and not very powerful. There is other software like Ableton, for example, that predominantly uses a vertical loop-based workflow.

Since almost all EDM and House is loop-based music, many people find the Ableton production method more suitable. Furthermore, Logic only being available on Mac is another reason why electronic music producers on PCs will often turn to Ableton. As previously mentioned, Ableton is a favorite among EDM producers worldwide. Although this is partly because Logic is not available on PCs, that is not the full reason.

For those who want a Logic alternative but still prefer the linear timeline based workflow, there is the option of FL studio. The other alternative option for Electronic Music producers is Cubase.

If you think you like what you are achieving, you can save it as a preset. Change now to the Final Hip Hop Compressor and again, a totally different sound and the stereo output goes into the red, which is a no-no.

So if I turn down the plug-ins output from I like it but Band 3 sounds a little obnoxious on this piece to my ear, so I drag its Gain Make-up down to Obviously these are totally subjective choices and you may want a very different result, but if you spend a couple of hours with this, I think you will get a feel for just how powerful a tool the Multipressor is. You betcha, so I open a Limiter below the Multipressor and with the default, the sure enough, problem is solved.

But when I bypass it and open an Adaptive Limiter with its default, the sound takes on yet another dimension. So what is the Adaptive Limiter doing that the regular Limiter is not? The regular Limiter functions only as a brick wall.

The Adaptive Limiter works by rounding and smoothing peaks in the sound, adapting to the source material, kind of like an analog amplifier being driven, which does somewhat color the sound. For me, it does so in a very pleasing way. The GUI is very straight ahead. You see how much signal is coming into the Adaptive Limiter in the Input, how much it is reduced and how much is being outputted to the stereo output. You can see the setting for the Gain, while the Out Ceiling makes sure that the signal does not rise above its setting.

The Lookahead knob determines how far ahead it is looking for those peaks while clicking Apply for the Optimal Lookahead does just that, tries to determine that. If you have some not so hotsy-totsy hardware unit being employed, Remove DC Offset essentially turns on a high pass filter to get rid of some of the noise. I turn it off.
