Use a crane or lifting de- vice to separate the transmission from the engine. Remove engine and transmission as a unit from lift truck. The connectors on the transmission and control valve are easily damaged. NOTE: When disconnecting wiring harness connec- tors during disassembly, tag each connector to aid in connecting the wiring harness during reassem- bly.

Put engine and transmission on solid blocks on a work surface. Disconnect transmission wiring harness connec- tors from control valve and transmission. Remove transmission wiring harness from trans- mission. See Figure 3.

Use a flashlight to see the bolts as they are rota- ted into view through the access hole. DO NOT use your fingers to check for alignment of the bolts with the access hole. Move each bolt into view through access hole of flywheel housing by rotating crankshaft. Re- move four capscrews that attach flywheel to torque converter. See Figure 4. Torque Converter Bolt Access 4. Remove access cover from torque converter housing.

Install a lifting eye bolt into rear access cover bolt hole, and connect a lifting device to eye bolt. Remove ten capscrews that hold torque converter housing to flywheel housing on engine. Carefully separate transmission from engine. NOTE: The torque converter cannot be repaired and must be replaced as a unit, if damaged.

Carefully remove torque converter from stator support. See Figure 5. PLUG Torque Converter Removal 6. Remove plug, suction screen spring, and suc- tion screen from torque converter housing, and drain oil from transmission. Remove transmission charge pump. See Charge Pump Repair. Remove transmission oil filter from torque con- verter housing.

If damaged, remove two cap screws and small access cover from the torque converter housing. Remove dipstick and dipstick tube from torque converter housing. Remove transmission oil temperature sensor from torque converter housing. If the transmission clutch packs are in need of further repair, see Clutch Packs Repair. Remove two long capscrews and washers from inner face of torque converter housing.

See Fig- ure 7. Remove 15 capscrews from transmission hous- ing. See Figure 6. Remove two mounting capscrews and harness bracket from front of torque converter housing. Using a small pry bar in the designated pry points, remove the torque converter housing from the transmission housing. Remove and discard O-rings and gasket. See Figure 7. O-RING 7. Install new O-rings and gasket to torque con- verter housing and transmission housing.

Install harness bracket and two mounting cap- screws to front of torque converter housing. Using fifteen capscrews, install transmission housing to torque converter housing. Install two washers and long capscrews into face of torque converter housing.

If removed, install small access cover and two capscrews on torque converter housing. Tighten capscrews to 7. See Figure 8. Torque Converter Installation 6. Install a new transmission oil filter on torque converter housing. Install the transmission charge pump. Install suction screen, suction screen spring, and plug into torque converter housing. Install torque converter onto stator support. Make sure splines are aligned and converter engages fully.

Lubricate the pilot hub on the torque converter with antiseize compound. Install transmission oil temperature sensor on torque converter housing. NOTE: Apply adhesive to entire surface of hole, Also apply adhesive to lower Install dipstick tube and dipstick into torque converter housing.

Air pressure in tires can cause tire and rim parts to explode, which can cause serious injury or death.

Never loosen nuts that hold together in- ner and outer wheel halves when there is air pres- sure in tire. Remove wheels. Disconnect brake line connecting master cylin- der to brake manifold located on top of drive axle assembly. See Figure 4. Remove parking brake cable. Place blocks under drive axle assembly and connect slings and lifting device to drive axle. Place blocks under transmission to support the transmission while removing drive axle.

Remove two bolts and remove universal joint from transmission. See Figure 3. Remove transmission isolator mounting bolt from transmission mounting bracket, located on top of drive axle assembly. See Figure 7. Remove four drive axle mounting capscrews from hanger assembly. Remove blocks, lower drive axle assembly, and disengage the drive axle assembly from trans- mission.

Place blocks under the drive axle center section assembly. Remove hanger assembly capscrews and hanger assembly. Repeat this step on the oppo- site side. BOLTS 2.

When using cleaning solvents, always follow the solvent manufactur- er’s recommended safety precautions. Clean all the parts of the drive axle assembly with solvent. Inspect the bearings and seals for damage. Inspect the drive axle shafts for wear and cracks at the flange, shaft, and damaged splines. If axle shafts show signs of wear or damage, replace the axle shafts. Apply grease to new O-rings and install O-rings on the hanger assemblies.
